Pierce took Emilia’s tablet back to Stephen’s place. Before he handed the device to his grandson, however, he showed his grandson the dating profile he’d created.

“Whoa, what’s this, Grandpa? You’re hitting up the dating apps now?” Stephen joked. “Watch out, or I’m gonna tell Grandma about this.”

“Go ahead and tell her, kid. Take a closer look at my profile.”

Stephen’s eyes grew wide, and then he burst out laughing. “Grandpa! What the hell? Are you trying to be a matchmaker for me or something? Trust me, I don’t need any help to get dates! Well, um, okay, that might not be entirely true, but I sure as hell don’t need your help to get dates!”

“I wasn’t trying to set you up with any strange women, kid,” Pierce said, grinning. “I mean, I could help you do that if you really wanted me to, but anyway, I was looking for one specific woman, and I found her.” He showed Stephen Carmen’s profile, which he had saved. “Now, I figure if she’s on here, she probably met her current boyfriend on here, too. And if we can find him, we can find her. Can you do that?”

“Hmm,” Stephen mused. “It’d be really easy if I had her phone, but of course, we don’t have that. But I know some guys who can probably hack into her account and go through her matches and messages and stuff. It’s, um, doing that is not exactly legal, though…”

“You know how I feel about bending the rules, kid. If it moves us closer to our goal, and nobody gets hurt in the process…” he trailed off and gave a shrug.

“All right, let me call my buddies up and see what they can do.”

“Thanks.”

It didn’t take too long for Stephen’s friends to hack into Carmen’s account—they set up the whole thing so Stephen and Pierce could watch them doing it live via Stephen’s computer. Once they were in, it only took a few seconds to see who Carmen’s boyfriend was—her most recent connection, with whom she’d matched only two weeks earlier. He was a chubby, tattooed, bearded biker in his fifties, and while he was only named “Cobra” on the dating app, Stephen’s buddies did some reverse image searching of the pictures he’d used in his profile. They soon got his real name and identity.

“Carl Rabe, huh,” Stephen remarked. “He looks like a sketchy dude. Do you think he might be involved in the kidnapping somehow?”

“I doubt it,” Pierce answered. “Based on what we know for sure about the kidnapper, this guy definitely isn’t him, and also, I very much doubt that this sort of guy is the type that our kidnapper associates with. But we can’t be sure, of course, and we do need to follow this up.”

It wasn’t difficult to locate Carl Rabe; a simple Google search revealed that he worked in a local automobile junkyard a couple miles outside of town. Stephen and Pierce decided to take a drive down there.
